Farm Bill amendment for GE labeling
June 20, 2012
Below is a list of food businesses and trade associations along with consumer, public health and environmental organizations and commercial, recreational and subsistence fishing associations who endorse the Sanders-Boxer-Begich Amendment (SA 2310) to the Farm Bill (S. 3240), which clarifies that states they have the authority to require the labeling of foods produced through genetic engineering or derived from organisms that have been genetically engineered (GE).
The measure also would require the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to report to Congress within two years on the percentage of food and beverages in the United States that contain GE ingredients. Absent clear labeling of foods produced through genetic engineering, consumers are deprived necessary and important information about the foods they are purchasing. In response dozens of states have introduced labeling laws and this amendment would provide clarity on their right to do so.
