United Farm Workers vs. Gallo

Dear Matt,

As your Sonoma wines demonstrate, you’re obviously well aware that great wines start in the vineyards. We also both know that great vineyards don’t grow by themselves. They require intensive labor, care and nurturing.

Without the real sweat equity of the men and women who labor in your vineyards, great wines are not possible, nor are your profits. These workers — the bedrock and very foundation of your success — deserve parity with all others you employ, full or part time, seasonal or not. They deserve a decent living wage, full medical, dental and vision coverage year round, as well as facilities for safety and hygiene while on the job.

As of two weeks ago, we ceased doing business with your western Washington wholesaler, Northwest Wine Company. We believe a corporation’s success should not be won by exploiting its most essential and vulnerable workers.

We urge you to resolve your dispute with the United Farm Workers immediately by granting them the benefits they deserve and which Gallo clearly can afford.

Sincerely,

Tracy Wolpert
Chief Executive Officer
