The best gift for the hungry: food

Giving anonymously is a great way to add light to your own life while shining that light into someone else’s as well.
This is the time of year when the gift of food is given to families, friends, and business acquaintances. Gifts of food are also given to those in need, and this year finds that need is even greater.
Who uses food banks? The person behind you in line, the attendant at your local place of business, the woman you spoke to in the library, the child at the playground and the elderly person you pass on your daily walk. The faces of hunger vary and come from a multitude of backgrounds and cultures. But they’re all driven by the same need — the amount of food they have for their household doesn’t meet their needs each month.
Of course, PCC shoppers have been donating to Cash for the Hungry for years. But how much food is your money buying? Well, that depends on what’s purchased. Your money buys bulk nutritious food like beans, rice, granola, soup and nuts — the same items you buy in the bulk section of our stores. For example, here’s what $5 buys:
- Granola for 40 breakfasts, or
- 128 servings of rice, or
- Pasta for 60 people
