Betty Hughes' $45,000 challenge to PCC members

Betty Hughes will match every dollar PCC members give to the Fund with 50 cents of her own, up to a combined total of $45,000. Her campaign lasts through October.

“When I was very young,” she says, “a little girl growing up, vegetable gardens helped our extended family survive the Depression. The gardens were big and really important. In my awareness, they’re still big.

“Supporting the Farmland Fund to save organic vegetable ‘gardens’ on a larger scale helps me and may help others combat a different kind of depression — awareness of what has happened to the land and to our food supply. When we give to the Farmland Fund we’re doing something good for ourselves, too.”

“I dedicate this challenge in appreciation of all PCC workers over the decades and to the memory of my grandparents, Grandma Bessie and Grandpa John Kinnaman. I’m also doing this for selfish reasons: I like a good carrot.”

Betty’s challenge includes the ongoing campaign of “protection shares” in the Delta Farm. When we’ve paid off the bank loan we’ll celebrate by producing the stakeholder plaques and installing them on the fences and buildings!

Linda Waterfall benefit concert
Save the date! Linda Waterfall, the Righteous Mothers and the University Congregational Choir in concert to benefit the Farmland Fund Saturday, May 12, 8 p.m. at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry, 2700 24th Avenue East.
