PCC staff member elected to NNFA Board

Roxanne Green, Supplement and Bodycare Coordinator at PCC Kirkland, has been elected to the board of the National Nutritional Foods Association Northwest (NNFA-NW). The NNFA is a trade association that supports the production, marketing and consumption of nutritional foods, supplements and specialty products. NNFA-NW supports the natural products industry by working to protect the industry from laws and regulations adverse to its interests, provides education to members, and encourages development of adequate standards to ensure high-quality products, nutrition research and environmental awareness through promotion of earth-friendly products.

November board report

The PCC Board of Trustees met on November 25 for a regularly scheduled session. The agenda included a discussion of the policy governance model. The board adopted the so-called Carver governance model in 1998. In this model of governance, the board sets policies that enumerate the goals and limitations that guide management in operating the co-op. The board agreed that the model, as a tool, is working well and that the board will continue to refine and clarify the policies.

The Nominating Committee reported that recruiting efforts had begun. It’s the committee’s task to produce a slate of candidates for the board and nominating committee in the 2004 election. So far, five people have expressed serious interest in running for the board. The committee anticipates presenting a slate to the board at its March 30 meeting.

The board began the process of incorporating new language on sustainability in the Ends policies to further define and codify PCC’s commitment. The Sustainability Task Force led that discussion. The board decided that it might be more effective to devote a special session to this important issue. The date for that session has yet to be determined.

The Board Development Task Force is planning the board’s winter retreat. The retreat will focus on long-term planning for PCC. The Linkage Task Force reported on member feedback from the first “Talk to the Board” event at PCC View Ridge on November 18. The members who talked with the board members indicated approval of the co-op’s growth and direction.

Talk to the board

Have a one-on-one exchange with board members. Each month, a PCC board member will be available to talk with members at one store location. Here’s the calendar for the first quarter of 2004:

• Saturday, January 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at PCC Greenlake
• Saturday, February 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at PCC West Seattle
• Thursday, March 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at PCC Kirkland

Next board meeting

The next board meeting is set for Tuesday, January 27, 5 p.m. at the PCC offices. As usual, there will be time for member comments at 7 p.m.
