Annual meeting at new PCC Fremont location

Are you interested in hearing State of the Co-op reports from the PCC board and staff detailing the past year’s progress, as well as plans for PCC’s future? Would you like to meet and question the 2003 board candidates? Have you noticed the construction of the new PCC Fremont store and wondered what it will be like?

Here’s your chance — the PCC annual meeting is coming up. It will be held Sunday, April 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the new Fremont store. The store will not be open to the public until early summer, but members will be permitted to tour the new site after the annual meeting.

You’ll also have an opportunity to hear the strategy to increase community involvement and to celebrate the co-op’s 50-year anniversary.

From I-5: Take the N.E. 45th St. exit. Head westbound on 45th St. Turn left at Stone Way, right at N. 34th St. The store is on the right just after Fremont Ave. N.

From Highway 99 (north-bound): Take the Greenlake Way N./Zoo exit. Take left at the light, immediately moving into the right lane. Turn left at the light onto Fremont Ave. N., then right on N. 34th St. The store is on the right at the corner of N. 34th St and Evanston St.

From Highway 99 (south-bound): Take the N.E. 46th St. exit. After the stop sign, move immediately to the left lane and turn left at first light, onto Fremont Ave. N, then right on N. 34th St. The store is on the right at the corner of N. 34th St and Evanston St.

Sustainability retreat

Board studies sustainability

On Sunday, March 2, the PCC Board of Trustees spent the day in a retreat to discuss the topic of sustainability as it relates to PCC’s culture and operations.

The morning session was devoted primarily to digesting data from a range of sources that provided scientific, ecological and sociological underpinnings for the board’s discussions. The board spent the afternoon working with representatives from the PCC merchandising, marketing and human resources staffs to begin clarifying policies and long-term goals for PCC.

The group acknowledged many practices already in place at PCC that promote a sustainable society — including recycling programs, support of local producers, product selection criteria, living wages for employees, and educational programs for members and the community at large.

Elections next month

Board candidates named

After a rigorous screening and interview process designed to deliver the strongest, most effective board members, the nominating committee is recommending the following three candidates: Don DeSantis, Kimberly Norton and Reed Schilbach. Trustees elected in the 2003 election will serve three-year terms. The election dates are May 3 through May 25.

PCC Bylaws do permit a petition process in which candidates may collect 200 signatures (validated by the nominating committee) to earn a place on the ballot. There are two such candidates this year: David Ward and Ezra Basom.

Look for statements from all the candidates in the Election Special in your May Sound Consumer. The special insert will include ballots and complete details on the election process. Don’t miss your chance to meet and question the candidates at the 2003 membership meeting on April 27.

The members of this year’s nominating committee are Cathy Buller, Bob Cross, Mark Huppert, Carmelita Logerwell and Stewart Rose.
