Market Nights with United Way of King County and Solid Ground

The Seattle Public School District started Family Market Nights in the early 2000s with a mission to offer nutrition education and fresh fruits and vegetables to children. That grant-funded project blossomed into the program we have today — a unique collaboration of Seattle Public Schools, Solid Ground and United Way of King County that provides children and parents an opportunity to learn about nutrition and nutrition resources and to build community together.

Partnering agencies and schools host the Family Market Nights, bringing the community together, and PCC supplies the fresh produce for the mock farmers markets. We are proud to be a part of this inspirational event. Together with our public partners we create an opportunity for the school community to get together, learn and leave with a full belly and extra veggies to cook with at home.

Spreading food knowledge in the community

Twenty students studying Early Childhood Education at Seattle Central College visited the Columbia City PCC for a nutrition class with PCC Nutrition Educator Nick Rose. The class discussed nutrition facts and labeling, added sugars and healthy snacking. Students shared strategies for healthy meal planning and participated in a lively discussion of Seattle’s new tax on sweetened beverages.
