Mangos

Savor the sweetness of mangoes and enjoy a dose of vitamins A and C, as well as dietary fiber. We have the more classic Tommy Atkin, Kent and Hayden mangoes in store, as well as creamy Ataulfo mangoes — smaller in size, they have bright-orange flesh that taste like pure candy. Choose mangoes with a slightly sweet fragrance that give a bit beneath gentle pressure. Mangoes continue to ripen when stored at room temperature. Try a Ham and Mango Grilled Cheese Sandwich, a Mango Lentil Curry Wrap, and more.

Local asparagus

Tender green stalks of asparagus have been in stores for over a month now, but it’s time to celebrate this seasonal spring treat all over again with the new local crop from Inaba Farms in Wapato, Wash. This delicious member of the lily family delivers high levels of vitamins A, C and K, plus folate. Look for firm, bright green stalks; keep them refrigerated, and use within two or three days. Asparagus can be cooked in myriad ways — check out our recipes for Baked Asparagus Sticks, Chicken Pasta Salad with Asparagus, and more.

Artichokes

They may look intimidating but artichokes contain high levels of fiber (nearly half the recommended daily amount for women) and loads of antioxidants too. In May, you’ll find them at their peak. Select artichokes that are heavy and firm, with compact, bright green leaves. Refrigerate them in an airtight bag and use them within five to seven days. Check out two different methods for cooking an artichoke — it’s easier than it seems!

In the beer case: 3 Brews for spring

Expo Series: Noble Hop
from No-Li Brewhouse

Noble hops, a group of wild hops native to Europe, are known for their low bitterness and high aromas. This springtime ale showcases two U.S.-grown Noble hops varieties — Hallertau and Saaz — for a crisp, clean beer with flavors reminiscent of fine European pilsners.

First Session IPA
from Schooner EXACT

Arriving mid-May is a new rotating selection of experimental beers from our dear friends at Schooner EXACT, which also will benefit PCC Farmland Trust. First up is this ale perfect for spring. Bursting with hop flavor and aroma, but easy on the alcohol by volume (ABV), this is one you can drink time and time again.

American Cream Ale
from Reuben’s Brews

Here’s one for those of you who prefer smooth, easy-drinking beers. It offers a creamy body with hints of caramel and vanilla while remaining remarkably light, dry, crisp and refreshing. Just right for sipping in the sun.
